Stone Lanterns – Ishidoro

Stone lanterns or Ishidoro were first imported from Korea during the 8th century and were used for lighting the grounds of Buddhist temples and later, Shinto shrines.

Ishidoro were also given to temples as offerings – some temples boast rows of hundreds of stone lanterns.

Today, the Ishidoro is used mostly in residential and commercial settings.
